Painting Callipers and Drums
One thing to remember when painting the callipers is that they get hot just from
driving. However, that said my experience shows that enamel paint will survive
on there, as will the more hard wearing hamerite metal paint. For bright
colours look at engine paints as these come in solid colour and provide
excellent coverage. Being engine paint they will also not fade from the heat
of the brakes. Drums are not so difficult as they don't get hot, but then you
might as well use the same paint as for the callipers other wise they won't
match!
As for the actual painting, it is much like painting anything else expect
there is no primer used and it is done with a brush. Do not use primer as it
is not heat resistant and so will discolour the top coat. Give them several
coats until you can't see any bare metal or until the colour of the paint is
solid and the same all over. Always allow the previous coat to dry before
applying the next, etc. With things like this that will get all sorts of dirt
pounded into them it is always a good idea to give them an extra coat or two
after you are happy that they are covered evenly.
